Introduction
Under a hot-air balloon hangs a small basket, and on top a round big gas bag. After lighting the fire, it slowly leaves the ground like a flying lantern. With no wings and no propeller, why can it run into the sky?
Common Misconceptions
Many think the flame is like a big hand pushing the balloon up. Actually the flame does not directly push the balloon up; it mainly heats the air in the bag. A hot-air balloon does not automatically fly up just because it is hot. The key is that after the air in the bag is heated, it becomes lighter than the cooler air around it, and the heavier surrounding air holds it up.
Core Principle
Air is invisible, but it has weight and takes up space. The balloon bag is full of air; after the burner heats the air inside, the air molecules move faster and spread farther apart. In the same size lump of air, hot air holds fewer molecules, so its density is smaller, meaning it is lighter. The cooler air outside the bag is heavier. After the balloon pushes the surrounding air aside, it receives an upward buoyancy. If the displaced cool air outside is heavier than the balloon, basket, and hot air inside, buoyancy can lift the balloon. The pilot wants to rise, so heats a bit more to make the air inside lighter; to descend, reduces heating or opens a vent at the top of the bag so hot air slowly escapes. Then the air inside cools and gets heavier, and the balloon comes down.
Real-World Application
You can think of a hot-air balloon as a boat floating in an ocean of air. A ship gets buoyancy by displacing water; a hot-air balloon gets buoyancy by displacing air. Only air is much lighter than water, so the balloon needs an especially big bag to lift the basket and passengers. Hot-air balloons usually fly in morning or evening, when the air is calmer and cooler. Strong wind, thunderstorms, or unstable airflow make flying hard, so pilots watch the weather carefully.
Extended Knowledge
A helium balloon can also rise, but its method differs from a hot-air balloon. Helium is already lighter than air and needs no flame heating; a hot-air balloon heats ordinary air to make it temporarily lighter. A hot-air balloon cannot turn at will like a car. The pilot finds winds at different heights and directions, and changes height to switch to a different wind path.
One-Line Takeaway
A hot-air balloon rises because the air in the bag becomes lighter after heating, and the heavier cool air around it produces buoyancy that lifts the balloon.
