The helicopter is not sucked by air, nor is the engine pulling it up directly; the real worker is the big rotor spinning overhead nonstop. Stop the rotor and the upward force fades, and the helicopter cannot stay in the air. So hovering is not doing nothing; it is pushing air hard the whole time.

The engine spins the big overhead rotor fast. Each rotor blade is like a long thin wing that cuts through the air at a suitable angle, pushing a lot of air downward. When air is pushed down, it pushes the rotor back up; this upward force is called lift. It is like standing on a skateboard and pushing the ground backward with your foot, and the ground pushes you forward; a helicopter has no feet, so it pushes air down with the rotor. When lift is greater than gravity, the helicopter climbs; when lift is less than gravity, it falls. Only when lift exactly equals gravity do the up and down forces tie, and the helicopter holds its height. That is hovering. If there is wind, the pilot also fine-tunes the rotor angle and direction so the helicopter is not blown away. The quiet-looking hover is actually a nonstop air-balance contest.

Real-World Application
直升机可以悬停,所以特别适合在没有跑道、空间又不大的地方工作。比如救援人员可以从直升机上放下绳索,帮助山里、海上或高楼附近的人;新闻拍摄、森林巡查和交通观察也常常会用到它。
不过悬停很费力,也很费油。飞行员要一直观察高度、风向和位置,不能真的把直升机当成空中的“暂停键”。
Because a helicopter can hover, it fits work in places with no runway and little space. For example, rescuers can lower a rope from the helicopter to help people in mountains, at sea, or near tall buildings; news shooting, forest patrol, and traffic watching also often use it. But hovering is hard work and burns a lot of fuel. The pilot must keep watching height, wind, and position, and cannot really treat the helicopter as a pause button in the sky.

Some modern helicopters use an enclosed tail rotor or special airflow to steer; their task is about the same: do not let the body spin along with the big rotor.
