Introduction
A car turns with a steering wheel, but a train has none. Running back and forth on long rails, must the driver just listen to the track? Actually the train's direction is already managed by the wheels and rails together.
Common Misconceptions
Many people think a train cannot turn and can only rush straight forever; others think the driver uses the brake or the accelerator to change direction. Actually railways can be laid as curves and trains can turn; it is just that direction does not come from a steering wheel but from the track and wheel structure.
Core Principle
A train wheel is not a plain flat wheel. Inside the wheel is a raised ring called a flange, like a small guardrail that hugs the inner side of the rail to keep the wheel from leaving the track. The wheel tread also usually has a slight taper, and the left and right wheels are joined together. When the wheel set enters a curve, the rolling radii of the left and right wheels naturally differ, so the inner and outer wheels travel different lengths, and the train follows the curved rail to turn. Railways also use switches to split one track into different directions. The driver controls speed, braking, and starting, while the dispatching system or switch equipment decides which line the train enters. Steering is already done by rail route plus wheel flange plus switch.
Real-World Application
A toy train needs no steering wheel either, because its wheels are held by the toy track and can only follow it. A real train's track is longer and stronger, and its curves and switches are more precise, so the real train can safely travel between different lines.
Extended Knowledge
When a train turns, the bogie under the cars can rotate relative to the body, letting the wheel set fit the curve better. The outer rail on a curve is sometimes raised a bit, called superelevation, which helps the train pass more smoothly. High-speed railways demand especially high precision from the track and bogies.
One-Line Takeaway
A train needs no steering wheel because the rail draws the route, the flange prevents derailing, and the wheels and bogie follow the curve to turn.
