Rain does not wash mushroom seeds to the ground, nor do mushrooms appear from soil out of nowhere. The mushroom we usually see is only the fruiting body the fungus shows above ground; most of its real body is already the mycelium hidden underground or in wood.

菌丝像一张细细的白色网,平时悄悄在土壤、落叶和腐木中吸收养分。下雨后,环境变得湿润,空气湿度升高,温度等条件也可能正合适,菌丝便更容易活动起来。
这时,真菌会把水分和储存的养分送往小小的蘑菇原基。蘑菇的细胞吸水膨大,菌丝继续伸长,于是子实体能在很短时间内长高、撑开。它急着长出来的任务,是制造并散播孢子,让新的菌丝有机会去别处安家。
所以,看起来像“雨后一夜冒出”的蘑菇,其实地下的菌丝早就在准备了;雨水更像是按下了适合它生长的启动键。不同种类的真菌需要的温度、湿度不同,也不是每次下雨都会长蘑菇。
Mycelium is like a fine white net quietly absorbing nutrients from soil, fallen leaves, and rotten wood. After rain, the environment turns moist, air humidity rises, and temperature and other conditions may also fit, so the mycelium more easily becomes active. At this time the fungus sends water and stored nutrients to tiny mushroom primordia. The mushroom's cells absorb water and swell, the mycelium keeps extending, and the fruiting body can grow tall and open in a very short time. Its rush to grow out is to make and spread spores, giving new mycelium a chance to settle elsewhere. So mushrooms that look like they appeared overnight actually had mycelium preparing underground; rain is more like pressing the start button for the right growing conditions. Different fungi need different temperature and humidity, and not every rain grows mushrooms.

雨后看到草坪上的蘑菇圈,或树桩旁突然出现的蘑菇,常常说明附近有一大片菌丝正在分解落叶、木头等有机物。它们是生态系统里的“清洁队员”。

Seeing a mushroom ring on the lawn after rain, or mushrooms suddenly by a stump, often means a large mycelium nearby is breaking down dead leaves, wood, and other organic matter. They are the cleanup crew of the ecosystem. But wild mushrooms cannot be judged safe by looks alone. With an unknown mushroom, the safest is to admire, not pick, not taste.
