Many think a cactus grows spines just to prick people. Keeping animals from biting it is surely important, but the spine has a more key job: helping the cactus lose less of its precious water in a hot, dry place.

Most plants have large leaf areas, good for sunbathing and photosynthesis, but leaves also evaporate much water through pores. Deserts have little water and fierce sun; if a cactus still grew big leaves, it would lose water fast like an open tap. The cactus leaf evolved into a tiny sharp spine, with far less surface area, so far less water lost to transpiration. Photosynthesis is taken over by its thick green stem; the stout stem also stores water. Spines also cast a little shade, slow the air near the surface, and talk animals out of taking a bite.

仙人掌和多肉植物都是节水高手。给仙人掌浇水不能像给普通绿植那样天天浇；它们的茎已经像小水库一样存着水，土长期太湿反而容易烂根。
Cacti and succulents are all water-saving experts. You should not water a cactus every day like a ordinary green plant; its stem already stores water like a small reservoir, and soil kept too wet can rot the roots.
