Leaves contain lots of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll's job is important: it helps plants absorb sunlight and use water and carbon dioxide to make nutrients — a process called photosynthesis. Sunlight is like a box of colored light: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet all mixed together. Chlorophyll especially likes absorbing red and blue-violet light to help plants "cook." But it doesn't like absorbing green light much, so lots of green light gets reflected back. When that reflected green light enters our eyes, we see: leaves are green.

You can observe leaves of different plants: some dark green, some light green, some with red or purple tints. The different colors come from other pigments in leaves besides chlorophyll, like carotenoids and anthocyanins. Leaves turning yellow or red in autumn is also related to pigments. When the weather gets colder and days shorter, chlorophyll slowly decreases. Green fades away, and the previously hidden yellow, orange, and red become more visible.
