Introduction
Xiao Fei pulls a spring long, and when he lets go it whooshes back; press it flat and it eagerly springs open. The spring seems to remember its original shape, as if a group of home-loving ants lived inside.
Common Misconceptions
Many think a spring bounces back because air is hidden inside, like a balloon reinflating. Actually a normal metal spring is mostly empty in the middle; the key is not air but that metal, after being stretched or compressed, works hard to return to its original shape.
Core Principle
A spring is made of elastic metal wire coiled up. Stretching or compressing it temporarily pulls apart, squeezes, or twists the tiny structures in the wire. They dislike staying in the squished posture, so they make a force pulling back toward the original shape, called restoring force. The more you stretch or compress, within the spring's limit, the greater the restoring force usually is. The force you put in does not vanish but is stored for a moment as elastic potential energy; on release, the energy becomes motion and the spring bounces back, even wobbling a few times.
Real-World Application
The press mechanism of a ballpoint pen, sofa cushions, car shock absorbers, bouncing toys, and spring scales all use a spring's restoring force. A shock absorber also pairs with a damper so the car does not keep bouncing.
Extended Knowledge
A spring does not last forever. Stretching too long or compressing too hard past its elastic range, the metal may not fully recover and becomes bent; long repeated use can also break it from metal fatigue.
One-Line Takeaway
A spring stores elastic potential energy when stretched or compressed, and on release the restoring force returns it to its original shape.
