很多人以为肥皂泡里加了彩色颜料。其实普通肥皂泡没有偷偷染成彩虹色。那些颜色来自白光和薄薄的肥皂膜玩的一场“叠叠乐”。
Many think colored paint was added to the soap bubble. Actually an ordinary soap bubble is not secretly dyed rainbow. Those colors come from white light and the thin soap film playing a stacking game.

阳光或灯光里的白光,其实混着许多颜色。肥皂泡的膜非常薄,光照到膜上时,一部分光会从外表面反射回来,另一部分光会钻进薄膜,到内表面反射后再跑出来。
这两批光走的路程不一样,回到眼睛时会彼此叠加。有些位置的某种颜色刚好叠得更亮,有些颜色却刚好互相抵消、变暗。泡泡膜各处厚薄不同,哪种颜色变亮也不同,于是表面出现一圈圈会流动的彩虹色。这叫薄膜干涉。
White light in sunlight or lamp light is actually a mix of many colors. The soap bubble's film is very thin; when light hits it, part reflects from the outer surface, and another part dives into the film, reflects from the inner surface, and comes back out. These two batches of light travel different paths and meet at the eye, adding up. At some spots a certain color adds up brighter, while other colors cancel and darken. The film is uneven in thickness, so which color brightens differs from place to place, and flowing rainbow rings appear on the surface. This is called thin-film interference.

雨后地上的油膜、CD 或 DVD 表面的彩色光圈,也会出现类似的颜色。它们都不是自己带着颜料,而是薄薄一层材料让光走了不同的路线。
Oil films on the road after rain, and the colored rings on a CD or DVD surface, also show similar colors. None carry their own paint; a thin layer of material simply sends light on different routes.

肥皂泡会慢慢变色,是因为泡泡里的水往下流、也会蒸发,膜的厚薄一直在变。泡泡顶端常常会越来越薄,最后接近透明或发暗;膜太薄时,泡泡也更容易破掉。
