Introduction
Shout a hello into an open valley, and after a moment, the distance answers with a hello too! Xiao Fei almost thought a flying squirrel lived in the mountains that specializes in copying people. Actually no one is imitating; the sound travels a big loop and comes back.
Common Misconceptions
Many think an echo is a wall or mountain recording the sound and playing it again. Actually the wall does not really record. Sound is a vibration; when it hits a big hard surface, it bounces back like a ball hitting a wall. The ear receives this return sound a bit later and hears it as a repeat.
Core Principle
When you speak, your vocal cords make the surrounding air vibrate layer by layer, forming sound waves. The waves run to a cliff, mountainside, building wall, or tunnel end, meet a hard flat surface, and part of the energy reflects back. Sound travels about 340 meters per second in air. Only when the reflector is far enough that the reflected sound arrives more than about 0.1 second after the original do we hear it as a second complete sentence; if the wall is too close, the reflected sound crowds with the original and just sounds louder and longer-tailed, which is reverberation, not a clear echo.
Real-World Application
Talking in an empty classroom, underground garage, or bathroom, you feel the sound buzzingly follows you; that is reverberation from nearby walls reflecting constantly. Shouting at a distant mountain and hearing the same sentence back after a wait is a typical echo. Bats and dolphins actively send out sound and listen for echoes to tell if something is ahead and how far; hospital ultrasound also uses echoes to look inside the body.
Extended Knowledge
The farther the sound travels, the longer the echo waits. Sound must first run from you to the wall, then back from the wall to your ear, a go plus return trip. If the echo returns about 1 second after the shout, the reflector is about 170 meters away: the 340-meter round trip splits into two legs.
One-Line Takeaway
An echo is a sound wave bouncing back after hitting a distant hard surface; far enough away, the ear hears the late sound as a repeat.
