Introduction
Rub a balloon a few times on your hair or a sweater, then slowly bring it near a wall. The balloon may stick to the wall with a snap; a while later it falls off again.
Common Misconceptions
Many think: the balloon has invisible glue on it; or the wall itself is charged and sucks the balloon. Neither is true. The balloon sticks by static electricity brought by friction.
Core Principle
Inside matter are negatively charged electrons. When you rub different materials, some electrons move from the hair or clothes onto the balloon. The balloon then carries more negative charge, and the hair is left with more positive charge. Charge builds up but no steady current flows, and that is static electricity. The wall as a whole looks uncharged, but the charges inside it can shift a little. A negatively charged balloon nearby pulls the positive part of the wall to the nearer side and pushes the negative part slightly away. The near-side attraction is stronger than the far-side repulsion, so the balloon is held by the wall. This is called electrostatic induction.
Real-World Application
Moisture in the air, dampness on the wall, and dust slowly carry the charge away. As the balloon's static weakens, the attraction can no longer beat gravity, and it falls. In dry weather static is easier to keep; in humid weather it is not obvious.
Extended Knowledge
When built-up charge suddenly discharges through a finger, doorknob, or the like, a small snap or spark appears. It is usually tiny in energy, but gas stations, operating rooms, and similar places still take anti-static seriously.
One-Line Takeaway
A balloon does not glue to the wall; after friction it is charged and attracted by the wall through electrostatic induction; as the charge slowly leaks, the balloon falls.
