Introduction
Bring a magnet near paper clips, iron nails, or the fridge door, and snap, they stick. It looks like the magnet secretly spread invisible glue. Xiao Fei was puzzled at first: is the magnet secretly calling, iron, come here? Actually it is not the mouth that is powerful; a magnet has an invisible force field around it called a magnetic field.
Common Misconceptions
Many think: a magnet attracts all metals; sticking comes from the magnet's stickiness; iron is pulled over because the magnet is pulling a string. None is accurate. A magnet is not a universal metal sucker. Common iron, nickel, and cobalt are fairly easily attracted, but copper, aluminum, gold, and silver usually do not stick to an ordinary magnet like an iron nail.
Core Principle
Around a magnet is a magnetic field. You cannot see it, but it affects tiny magnetic regions inside some materials. Iron has many very small magnetic domains, like a crowd of little arrows standing in messy order. Usually their directions are random and cancel out, so an ordinary iron nail does not attract things like a magnet. When a magnet comes near, the field makes many little arrows in the iron slowly line up in the same direction. The nail then temporarily becomes a small magnet and is pulled over by the big magnet.
Real-World Application
You can test different things with a magnet: iron nails, paper clips, keys, coins, aluminum cans. You will find some stick and some do not. Fridge magnets stick to the fridge door because many fridge doors have ferromagnetic material inside. A compass points directions because its small magnetic needle is affected by Earth's magnetic field. Yes, Earth itself is like a giant magnet.
Extended Knowledge
A magnet has two poles: north and south. Like poles repel each other, unlike poles attract. That is, north and north do not want to cuddle, but north and south get along. Some iron, after being attracted by a magnet, temporarily carries a bit of magnetism; some materials, after special treatment, keep magnetism long term and become real magnets.
One-Line Summary
A magnet attracts iron because its field lines up the tiny magnetic domains inside the iron, making it temporarily like a small magnet that gets pulled over.
