Introduction
You bring a magnet close to a paperclip, a nail, or the fridge door, and snap — they stick! It looks like the magnet secretly applied invisible glue. Xiao Fei wondered: is the magnet secretly calling "iron, come here"? Actually, it's not a loud voice — it's an invisible force field around the magnet called a magnetic field.
Common Misconceptions
Many think magnets can attract all metals, that magnets work by stickiness, or that iron is pulled by the magnet "tugging a string." None are accurate. Magnets aren't universal metal-grabbing machines. Common iron, nickel, and cobalt are easily attracted, but copper, aluminum, gold, and silver usually won't stick to ordinary magnets.
Core Principle
A magnetic field surrounds the magnet. You can't see it, but it affects tiny magnetic regions inside certain materials. Inside iron, there are many tiny "magnetic domains" — imagine a crowd of little arrows standing in random directions. Usually they cancel each other out, so a regular nail doesn't attract things like a magnet. When a magnet comes close, its field makes many of those tiny arrows line up in the same direction. The nail temporarily becomes a little magnet and gets pulled toward the big one.
Real-World Application
Try a magnet on different things: nails, paperclips, keys, coins, aluminum cans. You'll find some stick and some don't. Fridge magnets work because many fridge doors contain ferromagnetic materials. Compasses point north because their tiny magnetic needles are influenced by Earth's magnetic field. Yes, Earth itself is like a giant magnet.
Extended Knowledge
Magnets have two poles: north and south. Like poles repel, opposite poles attract. In other words, "north and north don't want to stick together, but north and south get along great." Some iron temporarily retains magnetism after being near a magnet; some materials can hold magnetism long-term after special treatment, becoming permanent magnets.
One-Line Summary
Magnets attract iron because magnetic fields align tiny magnetic domains inside iron, making it temporarily act like a small magnet.
