Water is made of many tiny water molecules. When water freezes, the molecules grab each other and arrange into a fairly stable structure. The most common basic shape of this structure is a hexagon. As a snowflake grows slowly in the cloud, water vapor keeps freezing onto the little ice crystal. Because the crystal starts as a hexagonal structure, when it grows branches outward, it often grows along the six directions. So the snowflakes we see easily become six-pointed stars, six-pointed plates, or six-pointed needles. However, not every snowflake is exactly the same. Temperature, humidity, and wind changes all affect its branches. Some look like stars, some like small plates, some like thin needles. They all follow the same big direction: water molecules like to freeze in a hexagonal way.
