Introduction
In winter, taking off a sweater makes your hair stand up; touching a doorknob may give your finger a snap; at night lifting the quilt may even show tiny blue-white sparks. When Xiao Fei first met this, she almost thought she had awakened a finger electric-power skill. Actually, it is not magic. It is static electricity. Static electricity is charge temporarily piled on a surface. It usually does not flow much, but given the right chance it suddenly runs.
Common Misconceptions
Many people think: static is a tiny battery hidden in clothes; the human body auto-generates electricity in winter; or the doorknob is deliberately bullying fingers. None are right. The real key is friction and dryness. When a sweater, hair, plastic comb, carpet, and socks rub together, some tiny electrons may move from one object to another. Whoever takes more electrons becomes negatively charged; whoever loses electrons becomes positively charged.
Core Principle
Normally there is water vapor in the air and a bit of moisture on surfaces. Water helps charge slowly slip away, like opening a small channel for it. Winter is different. Cold air already holds little vapor, and after indoor heating the air gets drier. Dry air, dry skin, and dry clothes make charge hard to disperse, so it builds up more and more. When you, carrying a pile of charge, touch a metal doorknob, the metal conducts very well. The charge suddenly finds a fast lane and rushes between you and the doorknob. The snap you feel is the little moment of sudden discharge.
Real-World Application
Many winter scenes easily make static: taking off a sweater, combing hair, walking on carpet, getting out of a car and touching the door, lifting the quilt. They share traits: lots of friction, dry air, charge builds easily. To reduce static, raise humidity, such as with a humidifier or a basin of water; apply moisturizer to skin; choose cotton clothes that do not build charge easily; before touching metal, tap the doorknob first with a key so the charge runs off slowly through the key.
Extended Knowledge
Static not only makes hair stand up, it can also attract small paper bits. Rub a plastic ruler on your hair a few times, then bring it near scraps of paper. The scraps may jump up and stick to the ruler, because the charged ruler makes the charge in the paper redistribute. Lightning is actually a giant discharge too. Huge charge builds between clouds or between cloud and ground. When the gap is too big for air to block, it discharges with a crack. Of course, the little static spark at home is far, far smaller than lightning.
One-Line Takeaway
Static builds easily in winter because dry air keeps friction-made charge from dispersing. As charge builds up, touching metal or another person causes a sudden snap of discharge.
