Introduction
On a rainy day, the sky suddenly flashes with a crack, and only a moment later comes the rumble. Many people feel: does lightning appear first, and the thunder slowly follow? When Xiao Fei first heard thunder, she seriously drew on the whiteboard a picture of lightning winning the race and thunder panting behind. That picture is vivid, but the real reason is simpler: lightning and thunder are produced almost at the same time. It is just that light travels far faster than sound.
Common Misconceptions
Many people think: lightning happens first and thunder later; or thunder is the cloud slowly beating a drum; some even think sound takes a detour in the sky, so it arrives late. Actually, lightning is a strong discharge between clouds or between a cloud and the ground. The instant it discharges, it heats the surrounding air to a very high temperature, the air suddenly expands like being pushed away, and a shock wave forms. When this shock wave reaches our ears, that is thunder. So lightning and thunder are partners that start together.
Core Principle
The key difference is speed. Light travels about 300,000 kilometers per second in air, so fast that it reaches your eyes from the horizon in a blink. Sound travels only about 340 meters per second in air, about three hundred meters a second. So when lightning is far away, light first delivers the message it is bright to your eyes, while sound is still slowly traveling through the air and arrives a few seconds later. The longer the gap between seeing lightning and hearing thunder, the farther the lightning is from you. A rough estimate: start counting seconds when you see the flash, stop when you hear the thunder. Every 3 seconds means the lightning is about 1 kilometer away. For example, if you count to 6 before hearing thunder, the lightning is about 2 kilometers away.
Real-World Application
This knowledge helps you judge how far a thunderstorm is. If lightning and thunder appear almost together, the storm is very near. Hurry indoors, and do not stand in open ground, under trees, near water, or on high places. If more than ten seconds pass before you hear thunder, the storm is relatively far, but still be careful because storm clouds move fast. Safety first. Xiao Fei's pink marker can doodle freely, but on a thunder day you must not run around carelessly.
Extended Knowledge
Thunder often does not sound like a single crack, but rumbles for a long time, because the lightning channel is long and sounds from different positions reach your ears at different times. The sound is also reflected by clouds, ground, and buildings, so it sounds like it is rolling. There is another fun fact: if lightning is very far, you may see only the flash and hear no thunder. It is not that no thunder was produced, but the sound weakened after traveling far, or was affected by wind, terrain, and air layers.
One-Line Takeaway
Lightning and thunder are produced almost at the same time, but light is far faster than sound, so we always see the lightning first and hear the thunder a moment later.
