It is just hidden by the horizon, but its light still reaches the high atmosphere. The atmosphere then scatters that light into our eyes, so the sky stays bright for a while.

地球是圆的。太阳下山时,对地面上的我们来说,太阳已经被地球弯弯的边缘挡住,看不到了。可是高空的大气站得更"高",还能被太阳光照到。阳光进入大气后,会被空气分子、尘埃和小水滴散射。散射出来的光会拐到各个方向,其中一部分来到我们眼睛里,于是天空还亮着。这段太阳在地平线下、天空仍然被照亮的时间,叫暮光。傍晚叫晚霞、黄昏;清晨太阳还没升起但天已经亮了,也有类似现象,叫晨光或曙光。
The Earth is round. At sunset, for us on the ground, the Sun is already blocked by the curved edge of the Earth and we cannot see it. But the high atmosphere stands higher and can still be lit by the Sun. When sunlight enters the atmosphere, it is scattered by air molecules, dust, and tiny droplets. The scattered light bends in all directions, and part of it reaches our eyes, so the sky stays lit. This time, when the Sun is below the horizon yet the sky is still bright, is called twilight. In the evening it is the sunset glow or dusk; in the early morning before the Sun rises, a similar thing happens, called dawn.
