When astronauts go outside the cabin they must wear a spacesuit and carry oxygen and pressure gear. Did space hide the air away? Air is not an invisible blank; it is a mixture of many molecules like nitrogen and oxygen. We can breathe because near Earth there are enough air molecules and the atmosphere has suitable pressure.

很多人以为:太空里有一台“大吸尘器”把空气吸走了;或者太空把空气偷偷藏了起来。其实都不是。气体会向能到达的空间扩散,如果没有容器把它装住,分子就会越散越开,并不是被谁吸走。
Many think: a big vacuum cleaner in space sucked the air away; or space hid the air. Neither is true. Gas spreads into whatever space it can reach; without a container to hold it, molecules drift farther and farther apart, not because someone sucked them away.

Earth's gravity holds atmospheric molecules around Earth, forming the atmosphere. The farther from Earth, the thinner the molecules. In the vast space between, particles are far apart and it is close to a vacuum, with almost no breathable oxygen or pressure. Picture a balloon popped: the air inside scatters in all directions. In a sealed cabin, air molecules are walled in and keep pressure; out in space with no walls, the gas quickly becomes extremely thin.
