A meteor is not a falling star, nor sparks off the Moon. Space has many small rocks, metal bits, and dust that orbit the Sun and sometimes come near Earth. A meteor is also not a stone that has already reached the ground. It glows in the air as a meteor; only if leftover parts pass through the atmosphere and land does it become a meteorite.

A small body rushes into Earth's atmosphere at high speed. The air in front of it is violently compressed and heated, and its surface glows and burns from the high heat, leaving a brief bright trail. That is a meteor. The glow is not only from friction with air. Fast flight piles air in front and heats it by compression; the object's surface also melts and vaporizes, and the glowing gas and debris together form the light band we see. Most dust and small bits burn up high in the sky, so meteors look brief and sudden. A larger body may not fully burn, and its remains become a meteorite on the ground.

During a meteor shower, Earth crosses a debris stream left by a comet or asteroid, and more meteors appear in a short time. To watch meteors, pick a place away from city lights with a clear sky; no telescope needed, and lying down to see a big patch of sky actually helps. Do not confuse planes, satellites, and meteors: planes often have blinking lights, satellites move slowly, meteors are usually faster and briefer.
