Many think a volcanic eruption is an angry fire dragon living in the mountain, or that it only erupts when the peak cracks. Actually eruptions relate to underground magma, dissolved gas, pressure, and plate motion. A volcano also does not always look like a pointed mountain. Some are under the sea, some lava flows from cracks, and some stay quiet for a long time yet are not necessarily dead.

The inside of Earth is hot, and some rock melts into magma. Magma is usually lighter than the solid rock around it and rises along cracks and channels. Magma also has dissolved gases like water vapor and carbon dioxide. The closer magma gets to the surface, the lower the pressure around it, and the easier its gases form bubbles and expand. More bubbles mean more upward push and internal pressure, like opening a shaken soda bottle. When the pressure of magma and gas exceeds what the rock above can bear, the rock breaks, and magma, volcanic gas, ash, and rubble burst from the crater or cracks. That is an eruption. Different magmas flow differently. Runny magma easily forms lava flows; stickier magma with more gas builds pressure more easily, and the eruption may be more violent.

Scientists use seismometers, satellites, and gas monitors to watch volcanoes and judge if they are becoming active. If a volcano warning is issued, follow local official guidance, stay away from the crater, lava flows, mudflows, and low gullies, and do not approach the eruption area for photos. Ash can also irritate eyes and airways.
