The outermost rocky layer of Earth is split into many huge plates that move, collide, pull apart, or slide past each other very slowly.

When plates move, the rock does not always slide smoothly past. The two sides of a fault may be stuck by friction, but the plates keep pushing, so the rock is like a rubber band slowly wound tight, storing more and more elastic energy. When the built-up force exceeds what the rock and friction can hold, the fault suddenly slips. The energy stored in the rock releases like a rubber band let go, sending seismic waves in all directions, and the ground shakes. That is an earthquake. The underground spot where it starts is the focus; the ground point right above it is the epicenter. Seismic waves reach different places at different times, so distance from the focus, ground softness or hardness, and building structure all affect how strongly people feel the shake.

Real-World Application
地震发生时,室内可以先“趴下、掩护、稳住”,躲到结实桌子旁或下面,保护头颈,远离玻璃和容易倒下的物品。不要在摇晃时冲向电梯或楼梯拥挤处。
地震预警不是提前很久预测地震,而是在地震已经发生后,利用先到的较快地震波提醒还没被强烈摇晃影响的地方,为人们争取几秒到几十秒的反应时间。

Do not rush to elevators or crowded stairs while shaking. An earthquake early-warning is not a long-ahead prediction; it uses the faster seismic waves that arrive first to alert places not yet strongly shaken, buying people a few to tens of seconds to react.
