The Sun's gravity is like an invisible inward rope, constantly pulling Earth toward the Sun. If Earth were completely still, it really would be pulled toward the Sun. But Earth is also moving forward at high speed. It is pulled inward by the Sun while rushing forward, so it travels along a curved orbit around the Sun. This state is called orbital motion; you can also picture it as always freely falling toward the Sun but always grazing past it. Earth's forward speed and the Sun's gravity fit just right: too slow and the orbit would flatten and Earth might get closer to the Sun; too fast and it might reach a farther orbit or even escape the Sun. The current speed lets it steadily circle the Sun.

When you whirl a ball on a string, the string's pull draws the ball to the center; let go and the ball flies off along a tangent. The Sun's gravity is like that string, and Earth's motion is like the ball's forward thrust. Artificial satellites use the same idea to orbit Earth. They are not free of falling; they keep falling toward Earth while moving forward, ending up in orbit.
