Introduction
Xiao Fei saw an octopus on the seabed and, hearing it has three hearts, almost dropped his blue marker into the sea. One heart already keeps a human busy, so why does an octopus bring three pumps to work?
Common Misconceptions
Many people think three hearts simply means stronger than others, or that all three do exactly the same job. Actually the octopus's three hearts have clear roles: two serve the gills, and one is responsible for sending oxygen-rich blood to the whole body.
Core Principle
An octopus lives in water and gets oxygen from water through its gills. It has two branchial hearts, near the gills on each side, like two small pumps that push oxygen-poor blood to the gills. After the blood gets oxygen in the gills, it gathers at the middle heart, the systemic heart. The systemic heart is like a main pump that sends oxygen-rich blood to the octopus's body, arms, and brain. The octopus's blood is not red but often bluish, because it mainly uses copper-containing hemocyanin to carry oxygen. The three hearts relay the work, letting blood flow more efficiently between the gills and the whole body.
Real-World Application
You can think of the octopus's hearts as a delivery station: the two branchial hearts send the empty oxygen boxes to the gills to charge, and the systemic heart dispatches the oxygen-filled boxes to the whole body. An octopus with many arms and flexible movement needs a steady oxygen supply to swim, hunt, and think.
Extended Knowledge
When an octopus swims very fast, the systemic heart's work is affected, so they often prefer to crawl on the seabed with their arms rather than swim at high speed the whole time. Squid and cuttlefish, cephalopod relatives, have a similar three-heart structure.
One-Line Takeaway
An octopus has two branchial hearts that send blood to the gills for oxygen and one systemic heart that sends oxygen-rich blood to the body, so it needs three hearts working together.
