The beak, head, and neck line up as much as possible, so the impact travels mainly along a straight line, reducing wild head shaking. Second, its brain is small and fits tightly inside the skull. The less the brain can rattle around inside, the lower the injury risk. Third, the skull has some spongy bone structures, and the hyoid bone wraps around near the skull like a ring of seat belt, giving support. They are not an all-powerful airbag, but they help spread and support the force. Fourth, when pecking, a protective membrane over the eyes closes quickly, like putting on temporary goggles. So a woodpecker is not an iron-headed kid that fears no impact, but its body, moves, and structure are all well suited to high-speed pecking.
